the 600-block of south frederick burg after new in gaithersburg. now, get this. we were speaking to cops and they say two thugs came in from off the street. they walked up to the restaurant about 8:15. they came in the front door and came in using these. two fire extinguishers. they began sparing everybody inside. -- spraying everybody inside. the two men, we're told one dark clothing, came inside here. they sprayed everyone. employees and customers with the fire extinguisher material and then they robbed the karn register. the own -- cash register. the owner believes $2,000 was taken. the entire register was ripped off the counter. both of the men bolted off the door and they took off running. they are on the loose right now somewhere out in gaithersburg. montgomery county police are on the look out for the two men. they're asking for anybody that knows anything to give them a

call. i want to show you something here. it's kind of dark inside. if you bear with me, you can make out a little bit of the mess in the restaurant. the restaurant owner tells me they didn't want to clean up for investigation purposes. but you can see inside, the fire extinguisher chemical used. we're told it's somewhat of a dry chemical that was used. but, again, the scene inside there untouched. left for investigators. again, folks, this is the second time this has happened in a week. police confirm a similar type of crime happened last weekend at a nearby restaurant also here in gaithersburg. in that case, there were four juveniles and police did catch them after the crime. the thieves are on the loose. if you know anything, montgomery county police are asking that you give them a call. for now we're live in gaithersburg, ken molestina, wusa9. >> fire extinguishers.

meanwhile, inside the beltway, we're not seeing any snow. but south of town the snow was out there but now it's winding down. >> it's not snow you have to worry about in the morning. let's get right to meteorologist topper shutt. top. >> we have a little bit of snow in southern st. mary's county and down towards the northern neck. let me start with the radar. the good news is, as you messengered, it is winding down. -- mentioned, it is winding down. but it is producing some snow in richmond to charlottesville. also across southern sections of st. mary's county. the white is the snow. the magenta here is kind of a mixture. and this is not reaching the ground. there's some rain, some returns up to the north, but that's not reaching the ground. we'll zoom in. here is the latest picture. a little snow in st. mary's city. not plowable, unfortunately. some snow in new land. and i say that because i got an e-mail and some snow back into richmond. temperatures wise we're still in good shape for now. 39 downtown. 37 in reston.

37 in fairfax and 38 in springfield. however, for your wake up weather, we're concerned about a few slick spots tomorrow. temperatures 29-35 by 5:00. and then 28-34 by 7:00. and by 9:00 we should be generally above freezing with lots and lots of sunshine but cold and breezy. so we're going to track temperatures overnight and track arctic air. it's on the way. we'll let you know when it rolls in. >> thanks, topper. so here is a story that has literally blown up in the last 24 hours. it may not be earth shattering, but people can't seem to stop talking about it. we're talking about the hoax involving a notre dame all american linebacker and his online girlfriend. >> yes. everybody felt so bad for the guy on the same day his grandmother died, he said his girlfriend had died after a battle with leukemia. well, now we find out that that girlfriend, she was not real. and some people are wondering whether or not he was in on it or was he just an innocent victim. we're just confused right now. hopefully dave can help sort it out. >> it's not going to be easy.

what a story. he was seen as a sympathetic figure. he told the story to national media outlets. they launched a campaign to raise money. but inconsistencies and his story and a lack of an explanation has people wondering what actually happened here. what is the truth when it comes to tao and the relationship he had with a woman who according to him he met online, maintained a relationship with but never met in person? the word bizarre comes to mind. notre dame stands by tao saying he was a victim of a hoax. but they reported in october that his father, son and girl had met. tao was expected to give a press conference, then an interview to explain. both were cancelled. the vacuum left by the lack of information has been filled by numerous accounts by numerous people. a former teammate describes tao

has someone who liked attention. another source telling the website dead spin he was 80% sure tao participated. he has no death certificate on record and stanford where she reportedly went to school has record of anyone by that name. the only photos are actually a picture of this woman who says she does not know him. >> really right now i'm not making any comments. >> much more to get to here. the university of notre dame knew about the whole september 26th thing but didn't say anything. instead hired a private investigative firm. the school also said they would leave it up to his father to explain how the two came in contact with one another. >> there is a lot more to be, i guess, answered on this. >> and there was talk that she met him one other time and then she didn't. who knows. >> that's crazy. >> a lot of inconsistencies, guys. >> and it's also left a lot of you asking how could someone carry on an online relationship for months, even years, without ever meeting them. >> we have an exclusive

interview that actually may help answer that part of the thing. debora. >> derek and anita, the woman you're about to meet says she was duped. the 24-year-old dancer and model may look familiar. she told her story on mtv's catfish. it tells the truth and lies of online dating. some stories on the show. but she told her story about an online relationship she carried on for about a year, but it wasn't with who she thought it was with. >> was he black? >> no. no. to me he was just so sweet. like the conversation. that's the first thing for a good relationship. it's terrible that i don't -- it's not really him. >> reporter: what was that moment like when he came out of the house? >> it was so heart-breaking. i'm talking to a guy that i'm thinking is this guy and the whole time it's another guy with a whole different background. he has family. kids. everything of that nature.

i'm 24 years old thinking we shared the same similar dreams and things like that and everything was fake. i wish that the one that i was told to be pretending was really the one. >> reporter: can this happen to anyone? >> it's a new generation nowadays. everybody tries new things. and, you know, when they experience new things. i mean, it can happen to you in high school going on a chat line. this chatting with dudes. it's the thing. but it's just different. it's adults. i believe you can fall in love. >> reporter: and those pictures that you saw of the person that was supposed to be scorpio, the other person lee who ended up being scorpio, he got those from a website. the executive producer of that show catfish says that the tools of this hoax are modern. facebook, twitter. but the genesis of this phenomena is old.

>> yes. a little bit of desperation. thanks, debora. if you are famous and you've messed up, the road to forgiveness always seems to lead right to oprah's couch. lance armstrong is no different as america was watching as he sat down and came clean a little earlier. >> reporter: lance armstrong admits to using banned substances during each of his seven tour de france victories. he said it wouldn't have been possible to win time after time if he hadn't been doping. >> i've used this situation as one big lie that i repeated a lot of times. and as you said, it wasn't as if i said no and i moved off it. >> reporter: but his national confession came just after one day after he was stripped of his bronze medal. in october he also lost all 7 of his tour de france titles after a report from the u.s. anti-doping agency accused armstrong leading what it

described as the most sophisticated doping program the sport has ever seen. for close to a decade, armstrong declared his innocence. >> we've got nothing to hide. everybody knows that. we've proven time in and time out that we're clean. >> reporter: in may 2011 a former teammate sat down did 660 minutes and described -- 60 minutes and described armstrong taking the performance-enhancing drug. >> i saw it in his refrigerator. i saw him inject it more than one time. >> reporter: you saw lance armstrong inject epo? >>. yes. like we all did. >> reporter: the world anti-doping agency says coming clean could help armstrong reduce his lifetime ban from sports, but only if he confesses under oath. to want to serve and

protect, a dc officer was found guilty of killing his young daughter and his girlfriend. prosecutors said it was the married cop didn't want to acknowledge the little girl and pay child support. gary nurenberg has the story from the courthouse. >> reporter: dc vice officer richmond phillips was hours away from a paternity hearing. >> he called her at 10:00 tonight and told her to meet at the park. we haven't heard from her since. >> he said i'm on my way to take jay lynne to meet her -- jaylin for the first time. >> reporter: jurors were convinced he killed her, left her bodies in the woods and then drove away in her car with her daughter inside. 11-month-old jaylin was left in the car in sweltering heat and was found dead days later. the criminal courts in prince george's county are busy. since the state's attorney two

years ago, her office was prosecuted 80,000 cases. this is the first one she has argued personally. >> any police officer. but a sworn officer was capable of killing a child in this manner was just unbelievable. and it was his own child. so these facts were unusual. and in my mind, these were both babies, and there was no doubt in my mind that i was going to have to come in on this one. and it was really -- we worked very hard. we work hard on all of our cases. but this one i think was personal to many of us. especially those of us who are parents. >> i wanted him to get the death penalty because he took my baby and my grand baby. >> reporter: under law, phillips faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced in march. his attorney says he'll appeal. gary nurenberg, wusa9. in a movie theater, you'll see plenty of tragedy. make believe kind.

for some really good news in tonight's health alert, the overall cancer death rate has dropped a lot in the last few decades. the nern cancer society says it's down 20% from its peak in 1991.

. put down the late night left over. it is time for tonight's food alert. joints is the right word for what russ ptacek found out there. >> reporter: no hot water but with a twist. restaurants operating with no running water at all. just until you see something that looks exactly like it on the floor. it could be an exotic spice. but keep on looking a couple aisles over, you may just find the real thing. at hot and juicy crawfish on connecticut avenue, customers had no idea that closures were for 10 violations. >> that's bad. >> reporter: what did you have? >> crawfish. >> reporter: inspectors say they were operating with no hot water and no food safety manager. >> oh, my god. i'm going to vomit. >> reporter: the woman employees told me was a certified food manager acknowledged she hasn't even

taken the test. and she can't answer basic food safety questions like what's the temperature for holding hot food. >> like 70. >> 140. >> reporter: our thermometer showed they did have hot water when they were there recorded above the required 110 degrees. here in arlington, cafi saso got in trouble for the same thing as their neighbors across the street. inspectors say there was a water main break. and when they came out, these restaurants were both continuing to operate with no running water. the manager says he hadn't realized the water was off and showed us it is on and hot now. across the street, they wouldn't allow us into their kitchen but did show us in the bathroom the

water now flows. in clinton at jerry's sub, inspectors cited 22 violations. that's your total. you're right. okay. the manager has asked us to leave. and he says he's not going to show us inside their kitchen. inspectors ordered jerry's closed citing a sewage backup on the kitchen floor. no hot water or soap at a hand sink. and a dirty ice maker, dirty floors. inside molly's grocers, the owner assured us what we found at first were actually -- that did not explain what we found in this corner. this is what i found here. >> no, no, no. >> reporter: that's mouse

allow temps to fall below freezing. here is a look at the radar. snow in new land. snow in leonardtown and a section in southern st. mary's county. we'll show you the latest image and zoom in. not much going on from dc north. but dc south a little bit of a mixture into charles county. and then you get down far enough into southern maryland, you get a mixture. you get farther south, you get all snow down towards reedville and snowing across the bay in the delmarva. so here is the deal. some refreezing overnight. slick spots are possible for the morning commute. be careful just walking the kids to the bus stop or get the paper. hopefully you still get a paper. not as cold on saturday. the weekend looks pretty good, especially by january standards. so tonight 20-34 for lows. tashl clearing. a -- partial clearing. a few slick spots. a gorgeous day on friday. sun rise tomorrow 7:24. we're going to see the sun tomorrow. 20s and 30s. mostly sunny. breezy and cold.
